Children's Book Reviews

Mummy thinks:   I love this book.  I think the illustration is brilliant and you really get a feel for what a cheeky little chap Alfie is.  It features a boy called Alfie who ends up locking himself in the house and his mum and little sister out of the house.  Lots of people enter the story to try and help Alfie unlock the door. It's a wonderful story that Holly could relate to and as a mum I could relate to it. It made me think of what trouble Holly could get into when she's that little bit older! It's a bit old for Holly to read by herself but it's fab for mother, daughter and son bedtime story time.I can't wait to get the rest of the series.

Holly thinks:   "Alfie is naughty like I am sometimes aren't I mummy?"

Mummy thinks:  A really lovely story for bedtime and any other time you want to snuggle up with the kids and a book.  Josh the Rabbit is the main character and he spends most of the book hiding from loud and strange noises.  Holly likes it as she doesn't like any of the noises either so she tends to slink into her pillow as we read how Josh slinks into his ears to get away from the noise.  Josh then finds the one sound he does like but I won't give it away.  Beautiful illustration and very lovable characters.  Easy to read and lots of repitition so the kids get to learn the story as you read it.

Holly thinks:  " Mum can we get a Bunny called Josh who rides on the train?"

Sam thinks: "Woo Woo"

Mummy thinks:  This is one of my favourite childrens books.  I'm a huge fan of a well illustrated book and this really ticks the boxes for me.  The story is fabulous as it takes you around the garden as Floppy and Ginger try to get their outside jobs done.  However this does not prove easy as the little friends who share the garden stop them from doing their jobs for different reasons. They reach the conclusion that their garden is perfect the way it is and it has a lovely ending to it. The kids get excited as new animals appear in the story and I love to read it to them.  A really great book.

Holly thinks: " All the animals are lovely Mummy, can I read it now?"

Sam thinks: "tweet tweet birdy"

Over the weekend myself and Sam decided to have a bit of a different story before bed and so we went for Harry and the Robots.

Harry and the Robots is from the same line of stories as Harry and his Bucket full of Dinosaurs, so the main character is the same.

Mums thinks:  A really nice story to read.  It's nice that we already know about Harry and great to read about his different adventures with Robots.  Sam loved the colours and shapes and would point to the pages whenever he saw a Robot.  He also liked the funny voices I did when the Robots were talking.

In this story Harry's Grandma becomes poorly and has to go into Hospital.  Harry decides to make some Robots to lok after Grandma and help her get better.  Harry's mum helps him along the way and when Harry takes the Robots into Grandma she is very happy and soon gets better.  The only thing I would say is that some toddlers may not like the fact that Grandma goes into Hospital.  I could imagine my little girl asking a lot of questions as she gets a bit upset when people get poorly but for Sam is was a good bedtime read.

This story is beautifully ilustrated and ideal for helping little ones calm before bedtime.

Sam thinks: "Aarrggghhhh" (Robot noise)

This is a book we bought for Mr Moo's book case. We gave it a go at bedtime and here is what Mummy and Mr Moo concluded. The Way Back Home.

Mummy Thinks: Beautifully illustrated (as you know by now it's one of the first things I look for) in a nice big format. If i'm totally honest the story confused me a little bit. I got the gist but it actually made no sense to me and I found it a bit random. It was an ideal lenght for a story for a 17 month old and Mr Moo was captivated by the pictures of rockets and little green men, but I didn't get the story.
I think it's about a boy who goes to the moon and gets stuck there and at the same time a little green man goes to the moon and get stuck there. The little boy decided to jump down and go and get a ladder for the little green man so this is what he does. They then both get off the moon and go there seperate ways. Maybe it is just a simple as that! I would read it again to Mr Moo but next time I know that I will be reading it with a confused look on my face.

Sam Thinks: "Spaceman yey"

This book review is for one of Little H's favourite books.
It's called The Littlest Lighthouse Keeper.

This is a story about a mouse who lives with a lighthouse keeper in his lighthouse.  Once day the little mouse is left alone and has to turn the light on to guide all the ships that are sailing in the storm.  However, he is so small that he doesn't know how he will ever make it to the top of the light house.  When he does get there is finds there are more problems and how will such a little mouse be able to solve them.  The little mouse is fortunate to have some very good friends who help him along the way and with a bit of team work they all get the job done.

Mummy Thinks: It's a lovely story that teaches children that A) even the smallest of people can make a big difference and B) anything is possible with a little help from your friends.  It's a nice bedtime read and Little H loves to hear about the problems and then hear how they all overcome them.  It has lovely illustrations the whole way through and I really do support the message to subtley gives out.  I like the way it has a good number of words on each page and so it's easy for kids to follow as you read.

Holly Thinks: "Mouse has lovely friends, just like my friend Olivia, although she's not a spider"
